Lytle photograph collection and papers, circa 1863-1978.

The materials are comprised of two collections, the Lytle Photograph Collection, ca. 1880-1915, and Papers, ca. 1863-1978. The photograph collection contains photographs taken by Baton Rouge photographer Andrew David Lytle which depict prison life and farming and manufacturing operations worked by prisoners in Baton Rouge, Angola State Farm, Hope State Farm, and a levee construction camp on the Atchafalaya River. There is also the original and a copy print of an enlarged charcoal portrait of James O. Fuqua by J.A. Ducuir. The papers contain a list of slaves on Mandamus plantation at the time of emancipation and the will of John H. Matta. The majority are genealogical materials of the Fuqua and related families, including a compiled genealogy and photocopies of newspaper clippings and family documents. Photographs include cartes de visite of Fuqua relatives, portraits of Fuqua, Sr., and Laura Matta Fuqua, family photographs, and photos of Fuqua's inauguration as governor. Letters from Fuqua's cousins discuss family news. Manuscript volumes include Laura Matta Fuqua's autograph book and a scrapbook for the year 1924. Also included is the Bible used to swear in Henry L. Fuqua, Sr. as governor.
